Investing in Mental Health

It feels like I can’t go on any social media platform or news channel and not hear about mental health. It’s become an extremely important and trendy topic over the past few years. In the past, talking about mental health was taboo. You kept it to yourself and dealt with it on your own.

A lot has changed.

Celebrities have started to become more transparent about the emotional hardships they’ve faced, helping to normalize the discussion of mental health. Yes, we (even people who seem larger than life) all have issues — or even a diagnosed mental illness — and there’s no need to be embarrassed about it.

This Could Be the #1 Tech Story of 2020

Legendary tech investor E.B. Tucker has uncovered a groundbreaking tech that promises to be the biggest stock market story of 2020. This viral video, shot in downtown Denver, exposes sensitive truths about cellphones and 5G. It will also fuel massive spending as networks scramble to fix this problem. For early investors, it could mean an absolute windfall. His experiment will strike a bad chord with cellphone companies, I know. But you’ve got to see what this man leaked… Take a look at E.B’s briefing here.

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety impacts over 40 million Americans. Despite increased attention to mental health, a 2019 report says that over 56% of American adults who have a mental illness haven’t received treatment. I believe that’s all about to change. That 56% now have the opportunity to access treatment that’s affordable.

With the normalization of mental health issues, we are starting to see a shift towards mending what has been broken. Until recently, going to therapy just wasn’t a topic of conversation. Now, access to therapists and counselors is easier and more affordable than ever before. Dedicated entrepreneurs and mental health professionals have been working hard to make sure help is available so that no one feels alone.

In the past few years, new ways have emerged to reach people so they can get the mental help that they deserve. Growing numbers of psychiatrists, psychologists, and mental health experts have been receptive to new technologies that let people reach out on their own terms. They can get help from the comfort of their homes instead of going into a doctor’s office.

Professional athlete and Olympian Michael Phelps is featured in ads for Talkspace, a message-based therapy platform. Even NBA star LeBron James has partnered with the meditation app Calm to speak about the importance of meditation’s role in mental health. Many of the health startups that have gone mainstream with the help of celebrities have become extremely popular alternatives to traditional approaches to the treatment of mental illness.

Life can be very isolating, but realizing the people you idolize have their own problems makes them relatable. If they can get the help they need, you can get the help you need. It is possible to get treatment and start feeling better.

While this mental health movement is beneficial to society, it is also a profitable industry.

Technology and mental health go hand in hand now. Estimates suggest that in recent years nearly a billion dollars in venture capital has been put into this area. More and more platforms, like Headspace, Calm, Talkspace, Mantra Health, and BetterHelp, have popped up. With services ranging from meditation to doctor-to-patient interaction, these new sources for help have made it easier to seek professionals without the traditional overhead office expenses.

For investors, mental health has been a viable investment. The industry will continue to expand as more and more celebrities, influencers, and regular people continue to advocate for ending the stigma surrounding mental illness.
